The "Well Surface Locations in Alabama" was created in 2002 as a digital shapefile to be used in the State Oil & Gas Board's (OGB) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database. This shapefile represents conventional and coalbed methane well bottomhole locations that are associated with the production of hydrocarbons underlying the State of Alabama. Data used to generate this shapefile are filed with the OGB.
<purpose>The State Oil & Gas Board of Alabama (OGB) is a regulatory agency of the State of Alabama with the statutory charge of preventing waste and promoting the conservation of oil and gas while insuring the protection of both the environment and the correlative rights of owners. The OGB is granted broad authority in Alabama oil and gas conservation statutes to promulgate and enforce rules and regulations to ensure the conservation and proper development of Alabama's petroleum resources, as well as environmental data, for industry, government, and the public. The OGB is the repository for all files containing permitting data, engineering data, production data, environmental data, base maps, and legal proceedings pertaining to oil and gas wells and fields. The OGB's GIS will provide the public and other state and federal agencies with a fully integrated, complete set of GIS shapefiles to aid in the regulation of and eduction about oil and gas exploration activities in Alabama.</purpose>
<supplinf>The State Oil & Gas Board is the sister agency to the Geological Survey of Alabama. These agencies share a close working relationship regarding the development of GIS shapefiles.</supplinf>

Any hardcopies utilizing these data sets shall clearly indicate their source. If the user has modified the data in any way they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these data sets, nor to imply that changes they made were approved by the OGB. The OGB should be acknowledged as the originator of the data.
